With a firm belief that each student is “God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance” (Eph. 2:10), the Guidance Department of San Antonio Christian High School, in partnership with parents, seeks to help students realize the plan God has for their lives. College guidance begins in ninth grade and consists of individual and group sessions dealing with academic advising, college admissions test preparation, extracurricular involvement, career and college major exploration, college selection, the college application process and scholarship search.
Academic Advising: Each spring, starting in the eighth grade, students meet with a counselor to review and choose their classes for the next year. Although students have a four-year plan for classes, there are often adjustments made to accommodate new interests and college plans. Students are advised to take the most challenging classes in which they can be successful and which meet the requirements of the colleges in which they are interested.
Testing: Students take standardized tests beginning with the Stanford Achievement Test in the freshman year, the PSAT and PLAN in the sophomore year, and the PSAT again in the junior year. We recommend that students take the SAT and/or ACT college entrance exams during their junior year with the option of retaking them the senior year. Test prep resource information is available through the guidance staff.
Career and College Major Exploration: Every year while in high school students attend an on-campus Career Day where they hear from professionals about various occupations. During the junior year each student completes a personality profile test which begins an in-depth exploration of targeted college majors and careers. In addition, students may also meet with counselors to learn more about college majors.
College Selection and Application: Through various in-class seminars, individual counseling times and group meetings, both students and parents are given information about colleges and the application process. In addition, college admissions reps are brought on our campus throughout the year, and SACS participates in a College Fair that hosts 150 colleges from all over the nation. Starting in the junior year, students begin the college application process working closely with the guidance staff.
Scholarship Search: Students are provided an extensive list of national, state, local and university specific scholarships and are given assistance in applying.
The Guidance Department staff consisting of two counselors and a secretary has an “open door policy” which encourages students to come in to talk and welcomes visits from parents. |
