FOURTH GRADE CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

BIBLE (Bob Jones University Press) – The fourth grade Bible curriculum covers the attributes of God, Bible study, prayer, faithfulness, the birth of Jesus, our victory in Jesus, living a life of contentment, and eternal promises.  A verse is memorized and quoted each week along with emphasis on a monthly character trait.

MATH (Harcourt) – The math curriculum is designed to develop language and problem solving skills along with foundational math skills.  Concepts include place value, comparing whole numbers, addition and subtraction of whole numbers, fractions and decimals, organizing and graphing data, multiplication, division, geometry, and probability.

READING (Bob Jones University Press) – The reader introduces different genres, poetry, vocabulary, decoding, comprehension, and dictionary skills.  It includes character building stories and activities that build literary and research skills.  Three novels, Medallion, Candy Bombers, and Island of the Blue Dolphins are also read.

LANGUAGE (A Beka) – Emphasis is on using language correctly in the written process.  The students learn the eight parts of speech and diagram sentences.  The students demonstrate proficiency by writing paragraphs, letters, stories, poems, and book reports.

SPELLING (A.C.S.I. Life Design) – The curriculum is designed to teach phonetic principles, sound-letter relations, visual memory, and meanings.  The goal is for students to transfer spelling correctly to their daily work.

PENMANSHIP (A Beka) – Review cursive formation of letters.  Emphasis is on neatness and increasing speed.

HISTORY (A Beka) – World history is studied from the War of Independence through the present with emphasis on God’s presence and leading in our nation.

TEXAS HISTORY (Scott-Foresman) – Texas history is studied the second semester.  Students learn about state symbols, early explorers, conflicts, the Republic, statehood, industry, and state government.

SCIENCE (Bob Jones University Press and Delta Science Modules) – Emphasis is on hands-on learning by participating in observation and experiments.  Units include digestion, electricity, the moon, erosion, color, light, animal defenses, insects, simple machines, and earth movements.

TECHNOLOGY – Students in fourth grade continue to use Microsoft Office Word 2007 and become more familiar with Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007.  Assignments become more complex during this year and students are required to utilize a variety of skills to complete projects.  Research and internet usage increase in fourth grade while keyboarding remains a priority.
