FIRST GRADE CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
BIBLE (Bob Jones) – Designed to be a way of life and not a subject, the student learns that the Bible is the final authority and the guide to reconciliation to God through salvation. God’s plan is presented through the study of Genesis, Exodus, the kings, Christ’s life, and missionary experiences of Peter, Paul, and Barnabas. Weekly Bible memorization and monthly character trait study is included. A missionary biography and other missionary stories help students see godly living in action.
MATH (A Beka) – Math is a highly repetitive skill building program that uses a variety of methods to reinforce the concepts taught. Through manipulatives, visuals, games, logical thinking activities, and problem solving, the students are well grounded in basic mathematics. Some concepts included are numbers to 1,000; place value through hundreds; fact families to 18; addition and subtraction up to three digit numbers with carrying to the tens and hundreds place; fractions; time to five minute intervals; counting by 2’s, 3’s, 5’s, 10’s, and 25’s; adding and subtracting multiple number combinations; measurement of linear, time, capacity, and weight.
LANGUAGE ARTS (Bob Jones) – This program is a closely integrated curriculum which ties the daily lessons in reading, phonics, language, spelling, and penmanship.
- Reading – The reading curriculum takes the student through six readers that have a varied genre to help instill a love for reading. Lessons check literal, interpretive, critical, and appreciative comprehension through oral discussions and word text pages. Novels or supplemental books are read at the end of the year once the six readers are completed.
- Language and Phonics – Language and phonics are taught together. While students are learning correct sentence structure, punctuation, and parts of speech, words which reinforce the phonics patterns are part of the lesson. Through games, songs, kinesthetic activities, and visual charts, phonics and new vocabulary, as well as sight words, are introduced. Sights words and phonics skills are also incorporated into the reading lessons. Some concepts learned are syllables, compound words, contractions, capitalization, prefixes, suffixes, and alphabetization.
- Spelling – Each week’s words are based upon skills being learned in language and phonics. The words are introduced in word families, as well as a high frequency word that does not follow typical spelling patterns. Dictionary skills are also taught.
- Penmanship – Phonic patterns from the daily lesson and sentence writing are reinforced while teaching correct pre-cursive letter formation, spacing, slant, and neatness.
SCIENCE (Bob Jones/Delta Science Modules) – This program teaches the order and design of God’s wonderful creation. The science modules give hands on experiments and activities to supplement the text to build student interest and understanding in plants, water, matter, and the sun.
HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY (A Beka) – Students learn of the history of our country’s formation and growth, and they study great people of our nation as they gain understanding of good citizenship. While learning of America’s land and countries of the world, geographical skills of direction, oceans, continents, and important landmarks are emphasized. A unit is devoted to Texas history.
TECHNOLOGY – Software is used in 1st grade to complement reading and math skills that are being taught in the classroom. Students begin to navigate games and websites under supervision and use correct terminology while using the computer. Curriculum is also used that introduces 1st graders to Microsoft Office 2007. |
