San Antonio Christian Schools Early Childhood Program

PURPOSE:
We are dedicated to teaching a developmentally appropriate curriculum from a biblical perspective in a
nurturing and caring environment.

Children are encouraged to discover the world through hands-on, interactive learning and the richness of directed and open-ended play.

We seek to emphasize Jesus' life and apply His character traits to each child's daily living experiences. 

Our strong academic program encompasses Bible, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.

 

PRE-KINDERGARTEN


INTRODUCTION:

Pre-Kindergarten at SACS is a half-day or full-day program that is designed to create self-motivated, responsible learners.  It is a program that excites the imagination, enhances social, intellectual and physical development, and encourages each child to grow in God's grace through an integrated curriculum that focuses on monthly and seasonal themes such as: All about Me, ponds, rivers and oceans; farm life; nutrition; Thanksgiving, Christmas and the birth of Jesus; winter and Arctic animals, Valentine's, Texas and The West, springtime, insects, zoo animals, transportation and safety.

…exercises that include pledges of allegiance to, not only the United States flag, and the Texas flag, but also to the Christian flag and the Bible.

Our Bible curriculum, Scripture Bites, is the basis for our weekly…

Our Letter of the Week from our Letter Person curriculum involves…Bucket Work and Learning Basket activities.           

Communication with parents is kept open through a daily take home folder and a monthly newsletter.  Regular conferences are available to parents.

BIBLE:
During Pre-Kindergarten, students will:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Christian Faith.
    • Know that Jesus loves them.
    • Know that Jesus died for them and rose again.
    • Engage in opportunities in which God could use them in service to Him.
  • Show evidence of growth in their personal faith
    • Grow in faith.
    • Pray for one another.

LANGUAGE ARTS:
Before entering Pre-Kindergarten students should be able to:

  • Take care of personal needs (bathroom, dressing self, zipping, etc.) and personal belongings (carry own backpack).
  • Be able to use their words to communicate their thoughts and share ideas.
  • Begin to recognize the letters of the alphabet and numbers 1-10.
  • Recognize their first names in print.
  • Be able to sit and listen to a complete story being read and be able to answer simple questions about the story.
  • Respond to simple directions.


During Pre-Kindergarten, students will:

  • Listen and respond to stories, rhymes, conversations, discussions and one and two-step directions.
  • Begin to recognize the capital and lowercase letters of the alphabet and their sounds.
  • Understand that letters are different from numbers.
  • Understand that print has meaning.
  • Learn that print is read left to right and top to bottom (page orientation).
  • Identify and make rhyming words.
  • Begin to recognize and identify the beginning sounds in words.
  • Learn to identify syllables within spoken words by clapping syllables.
  • Know opposite words such as big, little, up, down, near, far, etc.
  • Learn new words through classroom experiences and talk about their meaning.
  • Show their understanding of a story by retelling it, predicting what will happen next, and by putting events in sequential order.
  • Use correct pencil grip.
  • Tone fine motor skills.
  • Write their first and last name.

MATHEMATICS
Before entering Pre-Kindergarten students should be able to:

  • Follow simple directions.
  • Count aloud to 10.
  • Identify a circle, square, triangle.
  • Identify the colors: red, orange, yellow, blue, green, purple, black and brown.

During Pre-Kindergarten, students will:

  • Know that God gave mathematics as a way to discover the wonders of His creation.
  • Increase language and cognitive skills.
  • Sort objects by color, size and shape.
  • Make sets of objects (example: 5 cubes).
  • Master one-to-one correspondence.
  • Understand and use positional words such as over, under, up, down.
  • Recognize numbers, order numbers and count objects 0-20.
  • Know the difference between letters and numbers.
  • Identify and duplicate simple patterns, continue a pattern and create new patterns.
  • Sort and arrange objects by simple trait or category.
  • Understand a calendar, using days and months.
  • Be able to recite days of the week and months of the year in correct order.
  • Describe the order of events or objects using words such as first, second, before, after and between.
  • Compare objects according to size.
  • Be able to identify shapes including circle, square, triangle, rectangle, diamond, heart, star and oval.
  • Identify, describe, and compare shapes of everyday objects (example: clock is shaped like a circle).
  • Be introduced to the concept of simple addition using manipulatives such as teddy bear counters or cubes.
  • Use numbers that have personal meaning (examples: phone number, address, birthday, and age).

SCIENCE:
Before entering Pre-Kindergarten students should be able to:

  • Identify and name main body parts (head, arms, legs).
  • Ask and answer simple questions.

During Pre-Kindergarten, students will:

  • Know that God is the creator of all things living and non-living.
  • Use the five senses to make observations and discoveries.
  • Explore by manipulating materials with simple equipment.
  • Identify changes in daily life (seasons, weather, and temperature).
  • Make predictions.
  • Explain observations in their own words.
  • Learn basic needs of plants and animals.
  • Identify additional body parts (elbow, wrist, ankle, etc.).
  • Learn proper hand-washing techniques.
  • Practice good health habits.
  • Discuss fire safety, and weather safety drills.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
Before entering Pre-Kindergarten students should be able to:

  • Obtain information through listening, speaking and observing.
  • Use both words and pictures to express ideas.
  • Identify community helpers such as police officer and fire fighter.
  • Name self and identify family members (Mom, Dad, my sister, etc.).
  • Identify rules and purposes for having rules.
  • Practice basic school social skills such as respecting property, materials and other people.

During Pre-Kindergarten, students will:

  • Obtain information through listening, speaking and observing.
  • Share ideas and take turns listening and speaking.
  • Identify the United States flag, the Texas flag and the Christian Flag.
  • Know that food, clothing, and shelter are basic human needs and how those needs are met.
  • Describe family customs and traditions.
  • Discuss traditions and history of America, Thanksgiving, Native Americans, Christmas, and Easter.
  • Express ideas orally based on knowledge and experiences.
  • Identify self by name and birthday.
  • Place events in order of time (first, next, last).
  • Identify additional community helpers and their roles (such as nurse, dentist, doctor, postal worker).
  • Use terms to describe location (over, under, near).
  • Identify rules that provide order and safety in the home and school.
  • Identify authority figures in the home, school and community.
  • Participate in classroom jobs and contribute to the classroom community.

FINE ARTS:

ART:
Before entering Pre-Kindergarten students should be able to:

  • Hold and grip a pencil or crayon properly.
  • Identify basic colors.
  • Understand and demonstrate correct scissor use and safety.

During Pre-Kindergarten, students will:

  • Use a variety of materials to create original artwork.
  • Use art as a form of self-expression.
  • Enhance hand-eye coordination.
  • Exercise our fine motor skills.
  • Share ideas about personal artwork.
  • Show interest in the artwork of others.
  • Bring ideas to life.

MUSIC:
Before entering Pre-Kindergarten students should be able to:

  • Show an appreciation for music.

During Pre-Kindergarten, students will:

  • Participate in classroom music and movement activities.
  • Sing a variety of simple songs.
  • Play classroom instruments.

DRAMATIC PLAY:
Before entering Pre-Kindergarten students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate ability to share materials, take turns, and cooperate.

During Pre-Kindergarten, students will:

  • Share and learn cooperation.
  • Use language skills.
  • Verbalize ideas and concepts.
  • Understand emotions and feelings of others.
  • Communicate with others.
  • Exercise conflict resolution.
  • Use our imagination.
  • Act out real life situations.

KINDERGARTEN

 

INTRODUCTION

             San Antonio Christian School’s Kindergarten provides a safe and nurturing environment which encourages students to reach their potential. Our program seeks to integrate God’s Word as we meet the developmental and social needs of children. Each lesson is designed to excite the child’s imagination, while developing intellectual skills and their ability to grow in God’s grace.

             Our program offers both full-day and half-day sessions for students who will be five years of age by September 1st.  The class size is 18 students. Each student is evaluated prior to entrance to determine individual readiness for Kindergarten. It is our desire that each child be properly placed to ensure that this year of school is not only a positive learning experience, but a smooth transition.

             Academic areas of study include Bible, reading, phonics, penmanship, creative writing, science, social studies, music, Spanish, computer, art, physical education and library. Story time, group sharing, field trips, cooking lab, outside play, gardening, fifth grade buddies and many other fun events combine to make Kindergarten a memorable experience.

               

 

 

BIBLE:  Bible Truths for Christian Schools K5 by Bob Jones

During Kindergarten, students will…

  • Discover that the Bible is God’s holy and inspired Word.
    • Realize that the Bible is true.
    • Memorize Bible verses.
    • Determine that God speaks through His Word.
    • Listen to God’s Word and seek to obey Him.

    • Understand that God created the world in 7 days.
    • Explore God’s creation.
    • Thank God for creating the world and all things.

  • Understand that God makes and controls the weather.
  • Describe the water cycle, clouds and a rainbow.
  • Study the four seasons that God has designed.
  • Perform experiments involving magnets, buoyancy, states of water (liquid, solid and gas) and static electricity.
  • Study seeds and how they grow.
  • Learn and practice good health habits.
  • Identify and classify foods according to food groups.
  • Recognize the importance of a balanced diet.
  • Study the importance of our bodies and describe the human skeleton, digestive, system, heart and brain.

 

  

SOCIAL STUDIES

During Kindergarten, students will…

  • Discuss the history of America including historical and political people (George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, John Chapman, Martin Luther King, current president, etc...)

  • Locate Texas on a map and name the state capitol.

MUSIC

  • Sing a variety of folk music, patriotic, Bible and phonic songs.

During Kindergarten, students will…

  • Verbalize ideas and concepts.
  • Understand emotions and feelings of others.
  • Communicate with others.
  • Exercise conflict resolution.

  • Interact in small groups.

  • Participate in activities that reinforce math, reading, phonic and writing concepts.

 

TECHNOLOGY

Students review the different parts of the computer and begin to use the correct computer terminology. Software is used as an extension to classroom learning and encourages further development of reading and math skills.
