Preschool Curriculum "A Closer Look"

Bible
Strong emphasis is placed on the application of the truths of God’s Word to daily living. Character traits, Bible verses, and Bible questions are a regular part of the daily Bible lesson. Familiar Bible stories from both the Old and New Testaments are used to teach the reoccurring theme that God loves us. Prayer is modeled and practiced every day. A heart for missions and the needs of others is developed through mission projects (Feed the Children, ministering to local retirement homes, etc.) and correspondence with the class missionary.

Language/Phonics
Our language arts program incorporates letter recognition, beginning phonics, and a rich exposure to literature. Picture and storybooks are used to develop comprehension skills including sequencing, recalling details, making predictions, and interpreting illustrations. Kinesthetic activities as well as writing practice sheets are provided to help students learn to form letters and develop fine motor skills.

Math
Children are introduced to beginning math concepts through a hands on program using manipulatives, movement, literature, and songs. These concepts include, but are not limited to, ordinal position, classification, measurement, geometry, fractions, time, money, patterning, number recognition and counting 0-20, addition, and subtraction. Monthly and year long calendar activities provide opportunities for counting to 31, understanding before/after, yesterday/today/tomorrow, and gaining concrete understanding of 100.

Science
Young children are curious and interested in all of life around them. Our science activities are based on student inquiry and observation of weather, growth, seasons, health, senses, plants, and animals. Science is based primarily on exploration of God’s world and His creatures. A sense of wonder and awe is enhanced as children grow in their understanding of God’s creation and order.

Music
A variety of musical concepts are taught in our preschool program. Rhythm patterns, melody, sequences, steady beat, form and expressive qualities are explored through singing, listening, clapping, moving, and playing instruments.

Computer Lab
Computer Lab enhances subjects being taught in the regular classroom. Students work individually at their own speed while learning basic reading, math, and spelling skills. Colorful graphics with audio and visual instruction motivate the students and help ensure success.

Art
In the early childhood years, importance is placed on establishing a feeling of self-confidence and success within each child. This is accomplished by involving each child in art activities that are designed to build on the knowledge they bring to class. Children are introduced to a variety of media and will gain experience working in both two and three dimensions.

Physical Education
The P.E. program for preschool emphasizes the locomotor and non-locomotor skills of body control, hopping, safety, skipping, leaping, jumping, walking, and running. Students learn to kick, throw, catch, and roll balls. A wide variety of materials are used including hoops, balls, ropes, scooters, parachutes, frisbees, and bean bags. P.E. is held at least twice a week with opportunities for play on the playground daily.

The Surprise Can (Show & Tell)
Show & Tell is a natural extension of a child’s growth and development. From infancy, children are invited to “show mommy what you’re playing with,” or “tell Daddy your bear’s name, ” or “let Cousin Joe see your new toy.” While these activities are geared to either help build a youngster’s vocabulary or teach a child how to share, they can also help boost his or her public speaking skills.

We do not permit toys which foster aggression, including toy weapons and the "super hero" action figures. Game Boys, Pokemon, magic cards, Harry Potter, electronic toys and equipment may not be brought to school or on school field trips.

Preschool children experience Show & Tell in a variety of ways. The preschool curriculum incorporates a “Me Bag” that each child takes home at some point during the year and brings back to school filled with things that tell “all about me.” Another opportunity for bringing an item from home is our “Surprise Can.” Besides the fact that children love to bring in things from home to show their friends and teacher at school, sharing helps increase children's socialization as well as their language skills. The Surprise Can offers a different approach to ''show and tell'' or ''sharing'' time and involves critical and creative thinking. The Surprise Can, is a decorated, empty metal paint can provided by your child’s teacher. One child takes it home and is instructed to put a ''surprise'' in the can and think of clues to help other children guess the contents. Child and parent write three clues on a piece of paper and tape it to the top of the can. The child brings it to class the next school day. Your child’s teacher will let you know the schedule of when it will be your child’s turn to take the Surprise Can home.
